Chapter Fifteen

I woke about an hour later, exhausted, and dragged myself out to the kitchen to see who was about. I found Nell at the sink, peeling potatoes for dinner and offered to help. She sat me down at the table with a bag of potatoes, a peeler, and a bucket for the skins as she informed me Jake had headed in to town about five minutes ago to pick up some parts for the tractor. As she watched me from the corner of her eye, she added. “He left in quite a hurry. Everything okay?”

I shrugged. “I don’t know. He turned strange when Mac brought up Nikki and Brenda. Been quiet ever since.” Nell didn’t say anything and I was afraid to look up, so I concentrated on peeling potatoes and tried hard not to cry. I didn’t understand what was going on either, but I’d be damned if I was going to be one of those clingy, helpless women who got desperate and clutching when her man got cranky. I tried to convince myself that’s all it was. He was just a bit out of sorts and needed some time alone. I resolved to entertain myself and the boys this weekend and to give Jake the space he needed to sort it all out. He needed time to clear his head. After all, his divorce was still new and the scars hadn’t had time to heal completely. I prayed I was right.

Halfway through dinner, we heard Jake’s truck pull into the driveway. Nell scowled and snorted as she looked toward the door, but held her tongue.

Roy peeked at me out of the corner of his eye. “He musta had to go all the way into Phoenix for those parts.”

Nell snorted again, but said nothing.

I stuffed my mouth full of potatoes and forced them down my painfully constricted throat.

Several minutes went by and still Jake didn’t come into the house. We all finished dinner and helped Nell clear the table. The boys clamored to play a board game and I told them if they could get a bath and be ready for bed in twenty minutes, I’d play a game with them. Roy and Nell even offered to play too. Delighted, the boys raced down the hall for pajamas and towels.

Roy, Nell and I all pitched in and washed the dishes in silence, apparently all at a loss for what to say. When the dishes were done, Roy told us to start the game without him. He would check the animals and be right back. As he headed out the door and walked toward the barn, I went to the screen door and looked out. I knew there was a small efficiency apartment over the barn that no one ever used, but there was a light on up there now. Was it Jake? Had I made him angry? A moment later, a shadow moved across the window over the barn. It was Jake. I turned from the door to find Nell watching me.
